The answer is a resounding YES! Karaoke was indeed too much! I guess I should have been smart enough to know that for someone who hasn't been inside a bar in almost three years, going to a bar and standing in front of a crowd singing was going to be too much at one time. But there are times when I question how really smart I am and this is one of those times.
Let me set the scene for you. Every Friday night a group of neighbours go to karaoke. Since I moved in here they have asked me to go at least a half a dozen times but I always had some excuse. Imagine how surprised they were Friday morning when I asked if I could tag along. Well I guess some part of me should have known if they attend karaoke every week they are probably pretty good, but of course I was not thinking this at the time and promptly agreed to meet at K's house for some pre-festivity lubrication. At K's we decided instead of me going on there solo K would sing with me. So we decided to do "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" not too much singing for me but enough to get me onstage in front of people.
After a few hours we all piled into a cab and descended on the karaoke bar. I, of course, couldn't go first so I made K start with a tune. Honestly how was I supposed to know he sang "Born to be Wild" as if he were Randy Bachman himself? I cant even begin to describe how intimidated I was when time came to sing, especially when you consider I haven't really had much singing practice since Glee club in high school, can you hear the rusty pipes? I don't think K even got through the first verse before I completely chickened out and fled from the bar. Now keep in mind this was also my first time in a bar in a really really long time so I was pretty anxious about that as well. In retrospect working up to the karaoke by going to the bar should have been step one followed at a later time by actually standing in front of a bar full of people. But you know what they say, hindsight is 20/20.
So this week, I am actually going to a concert. Assuming that is, that I'm not too traumatized from the karaoke last week. I have had these tickets since they went on sale a few months ago - Great Big Sea at the Southern Jubilee Auditorium tonight and tomorrow night! I keep wavering between selling the tickets on kijiji or eBay and actually going to the show. So I'm going to the show! For those who don't know Great Big Sea, they are a folk music band from my home province of Newfoundland, check out www.greatbigsea.com for more information and to listen to some tunes.
And for the big finale...

Here's an idea for ya Bailout...
Go to a bar (any type, don't care if it's a pub/club/lounge etc.) and offer to buy your WAITER(ess) a drink of his/her choice.
