I have often wondered... if it came right down to it, and say, I had been on a sinking ship in shark infested waters, was on a rescue raft, and both my dog and a person were frantically swimming to get to the rescue raft before being eaten by a dozen sharks, and I only had time to pull one of them onboard before the feeding frenzy reached us... would I save the person or my dog??
Well I hate to say it, but I am pretty darn sure I would reach out and save my puppy, probably even a friend's puppy over a stranger. Maybe even a random puppy over a random person. So this gets me thinking... do I value dogs more than I value people? It might sound terrible, but i gotta say, overall I get along with dogs better than most people, and I like them more.
Think about it: people can be self-centered and selfish, careless, manipulative, ignorant, and arrogant. We often inflict physical and psychological pain on each other. We stab friends in the back over money and sex. We steal, we cheat, we lie. It is extremely difficult to find a person who is worth having a long term relationship with, either as a partner, or a friend.
Now I am not saying that ALL people fall into the above categories, but there are too many people out there who do. Dogs, on the other hand, do not. In fact, dogs are pretty much the opposite. They are kind hearted and loyal, they will follow you wherever you go, for better or for worse. They will rarely turn their back on you, for any reason, and if they do, it's the owner's own damn fault. They are the best friend you will ever have; they will die for you. A dog will love you no matter what your faults.
Actually I am not all that ashamed to say it. A lot of people value worse things more than other people. How about money and material things, for example? Therefore, if I am going to like something more than people, at least it is something as great as a sweet puppy dog!
Dear lord: please make me the person my dog thinks I am. Amen.
